Seasonal Treats - Dango

Story by Oku Japan

Dango is a traditional Japanese snack, typically consisting of small Mochi rice balls served on a skewer. Perhaps the most famous version is Mitarashi Dango, dipped in a sweet soy-based syrup and often sold at festivals and markets. You may have also seen the cute three-color Dango emoji on your phone – this type is called Hanami Dango, as it is typically enjoyed during Hanami cherry blossom viewing in the spring.

The Japanese even have a proverb - Hana yori dango (Dango rather than flowers) - which advises us to appreciate the practical side of things, such as eating rather than aestheticism – although one might argue that the Dango look as delicious as they taste.
