SpiceRoads adds a new itinerary in Hokkaido, Japan to its tour offerings

Bangkok, Thailand (November 17, 2016) – SpiceRoads Cycle Tours is excited to announce a new tour in Japan, "Highlights of Hokkaido." This new 14-day road bike tour is a once-a-year-departure, with the first and only tour for 2017 departing on June 25th.

Hokkaido is considered Japan's wild frontier. The northern island is renowned for its wildlife, volcanoes, pristine lakes, vast forests, and of course Japan's ubiquitous hot springs (onsens). This tour was designed especially for nature lovers who want to discover diverse landscapes and take in majestic views as they push themselves over mountain passes.

The Route

This 14-day tour is along tarmac roads in good condition and there is no technical riding. The majority of the roads are quiet with amazing views.

Tour Highlights

  • Cycle the highest paved mountain pass in Hokkaido – Mikuni Toge at 1139 meters
  • Cycle through Wakka Wild Flower Park with more than 300 kinds of wild flowers present
  • Overnight in Shiretoko National Park, home to Japan’s highest population of brown bear
  • Soak your muscles in natural hot springs at the end of each day's ride
  • Replenish your energy with fresh, locally-sourced seafood

Go the Distance

This is a tour for cyclists possessing a moderate to high level of physical fitness. The route totals 792 kilometers in 11 cycling days, with 7,020 meters of total ascent, and includes several mountain passes to conquer and some long distances when on flatter terrain. There is an option on day 11 to ride an additional 48 kilometers. However, the tour is fully supported and the van is always close at hand for those that find the riding too difficult.

2017 Departures: June 25

2018 Departures: June 24

The tour departs with a minimum of 4 riders, and a maximum of 16 riders.

Tour Price

The tour costs US $5,200 with an additional US $165 for hybrid bike hire or US $230 for carbon bike hire, and US $450 for single supplement.
