☰The Cairn Foundation (Stiftelsen Varde) is an initiative Hvitserk. By giving "ten kroner per day on trekking" (approximately US$1.20) through the foundation Norwegian mountaineers and tourists get the opportunity to give something back to the destinations they visit. The Cairn Foundation is supporting projects in several developing countries.
The Cairn Foundation’s goal is to gather contributors that will give their guests the opportunity to contribute 10 kroner per day to selected development projects. The donation goes directly to the Cairn Foundation and supports mountain development projects, whether it is education for the local people, environmental project or supports the development of jobs in mountain tourism on the spot. All donations collected from guests and participants, go directly to the projects. The initiative was launched by the Norwegian expedition organizer Hvitserk, which for several years has offered its guests an additional bill of "ten kroner per travelling day." This has been popular with their guests, and many wanted to support the selected development projects. The foundation’s goal is to include mountain hotels, ski camps, mountain film festivals, tour companies, guide companies and others to contribute to projects that increase opportunities for people in countries that are popular destinations for Norwegian tourists.
