This year the Uganda Tourism Board  has decided to make the Uganda Martyrs day a special day by organizing a walk to retrace the footsteps of the Uganda martyrs.  This walk will take place on June 1st  ahead of Martyr’s day on June 3rd Tuesday . All participants will pay a fee amounting to UGshs 30,000 each and the proceeds from this unique venture will go to the Uganda Heart Institute to help save a life of a child with a heart disease.

The walk will start at 8am from Old Kampala SS through St Matia Mulumba church also in old kampala where the oldest martyr was killed  before heading to Rubaga road where Jean Marie Musoke Muddembuga Muzeeyi was killed.

From Rubaga, the pilgrims will then walk heading to Mengo, which was referred to as Nkaawo years back now the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) and also a place that used to be the residence and office of the once Buganda katikkiro's . This was Fr Lourdel's first burial grounds in Nalukolongo ( the land/ place that was given to the missionaries by Kabaka Mwanga), and then the pilgrims will head to Busega where the burnt bodies of the first group of martyrs were dumped.

The Uganda Tourism Board hopes that this walk will raise over $200,000 and this should be enough to save over 200 children as according  Dr. John Omagino of the Uganda Heart Institute. He adds on that the situation of the children at this heart institute is alarming.

In Uganda it is estimated that 1.6 million babies are born every year, 1% of these have a heart defect and this comes to 16,000 babies annually. According to Dr. Omagino, 50% of these children require intervention . However the heart Institute doesn’t have the capacity to reach all these children.

Very few people in Uganda can afford to raise USD 1,000 required for a minor operation – this group amounts to just 3% of the parents of the 16,000 kids produced with heart complications every year.

It is therefore due to this that the Uganda tourism Board decided to introduce this pilgrim in-order to help save the Lives of as many as 200 children with an aim of raising over $200,000.
