Aba County is located at the intersection of Sichuan, Gansu and Qinghai provinces, with an elevation of 3,290 meters. It is a part of the prairie in northwest Sichuan. The season of July in Aba is the world of flowers and the sea of grass.
In Tibetan, Aba (Ngawa) means people from Ngari (Ali). In this area all the sects of Tibetan Buddhism remain and exist in harmony. Nangshig Monastery, located at a hillside to the northeast of the Aba County, is one of the biggest Bon monasteries in China and has a history of about 900 years after it was built in 1107. The nunnery Jomo Gompa is located at the Mami Mountain of Siwa Town six kilometers to the west of the county seat, the nunnery of Gelug Sect is the biggest one of its kind in Amdo-Kham regions. It was built in 1894 and has a history of more than 100 years. The Gelugpa monastery Kirti, founded in 1412, with its huge assembly hall and a 30 m high stupa is one of the largest monasteries in Tibetan areas with over 2000 monks and 20 tulkus (living buddhas). Ngayul (Saige Si) is a monastery of Jonangpa sect.
