With nearly 40% of the country set aside as protected conservation areas, Botswana is justly considered one of the top safari destinations in southern Africa. Diversity abounds with habitats ranging from the red sands and scrub of the Kalahari Desert to the flooded Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland river delta. Wildlife is well protected and thrives in abundance; Chobe National Park is home to over 45,000 elephants and all of Africa’s Big Five (elephant, leopard, water buffalo, rhino and lion) are present in the country, with the successful reintroduction of the black and white rhinos. Large-scale tourism has been specifically avoided in favor of low-volume yet extremely high-caliber safari experiences.
One of those wilderness areas is the world’s largest inland alluvial floodplain, the Okavango Delta, whose waters originate in the Angolan highlands and eventually disappear into the sands of the Kalahari Desert. Within this oasis, safaris can be conducted by mokoro, or dugout canoe, which offer an unparalleled experience for observing the unique flora and fauna of the region (including the largest population of free-roaming elephants on Earth). An entire trip can easily be spent in this wetter northern part of the country, visiting areas such as Chobe National Park and the Moremi and Linyanti Game Reserves. Or it can be combined with its near polar-opposite: the dry and seemingly inhospitable landscapes of the Kalahari Desert, where the only thing more awe-inspiring than the dramatic landscapes is the fact that wildlife abounds (think meerkats!) and the San Bushmen have been thriving here for tens of thousands of years.

James Wilson is a guide with Desert & Delta Safaris, one of the longest-established safari companies in Botswana. James grew up in South Africa at an outdoor pursuit nature school in Kwa-Zulu Natal where he had a passion for wildlife. James became an avid birdwatcher and wildlife photographer from an early age and has travelled to Botswana on safari throughout his life. He has a passion for Botswana as a destination and has been living in Chobe, Botswana for five years.
