Intrepid Travel Launches 2016 Arctic Programme with North Pole Ice Camp experience

Intrepid Travel has launched its 2016 Arctic season with four brand-new itineraries that offer unique and rare opportunities to see some of the most seldom visited destinations on Earth, including an Ice Camp at 89° north and Eurasia’s northernmost archipelago.

North Pole Express: Barneo Ice Camp

A five day expedition that spends two nights at 89° north at Barneo Ice Camp, this is one of the most unique North Pole experiences on offer. Constructed each year to be a functioning Russian science and logistics station, Barneo Ice Camp is incredibly remote. After landing on the frozen runway from Longyearbyen in Spitsbergen, travellers will explore the Ice Camp by air via helicopter flights as well as on land and will meet resident scientists, pilots, mechanics, engineers and explorers.

Arctic Archipelagos: Spitsbergen and Franz Josef Land

One of the most remote and raw archipelagos in the world is explored on this trip – Franz Josef Land sits in the north of Russia consists of 191 islands and was only discovered 150 years ago. The islands have no native inhabitants and are only home to walruses, polar bears, seals, arctic foxes and beluga whales, as well as rich birdlife. This 13 day voyage is a rare opportunity to see an incredibly isolated part of the world.

Arctic Express: Greenland’s Northern Lights

This 10 fly in, fly out trip provides an excellent opportunity to view some of the world’s most vivid displays of Northern Lights in Greenland. The active adventure includes a trek along the tundra and at Greenland National Park and mountain climbing. The world’s largest fjord system of Scoresbysund, wildlife sightings of whales, polar bears and musk ox and visiting the Inuit settlement of Ittoqqortoormiit are also highlights.

Scotland to Spitsbergen: Across the Arctic Circle

Beginning in Scotland, this 15-day trip explores the medieval art, architecture and archaeology of Britain’s northernmost archipelagos of the Orkney and Shetland Islands, including their Viking history, before heading north into Norwegian Sea. The UNESCO protected Vega Island is rich with birdlife and many deep fjords and coves are reached on board the smaller expedition ship.
