KUMANO KODO - JAPAN'S CAMINO
Discover ancient traditions and magical landscapes on the sacred trails of Kumano Kodo in Japan.
The Kumano Kodo is a network of trails taken by pilgrims for many centuries to the sacred sites of the Kii Mountains of Japan. Shinto and Buddhist shrines along the route share this cultural landscape in perfect harmony reflecting the fascinating religious and cultural diversity of the region.
It was in this region where emperors from Kyoto and Nara would travel to, seeking spiritual retreat and purification in the waters of the area's hot springs.
This UNESCO-listed pilgrimage route is twinned with the Camino de Santiago and pilgrims looking to complete both the Kumano Kodo and the Camino can request a 'dual pilgrim passport' that can be stamped to document both their journeys.
