An adventure to Costa Rica with Western River Expeditions packs as much activity into each day as guests can handle with time out to be romanced by the tropical surroundings including, new this season, an invitation to zip line to breakfast or lunch.

Pacuare Lodge, a premier eco-lodge, is one of four accommodations where guests dine and sleep on Western River Expeditions’ 9-day/8-night Costa Rica Vacation Package. Here early risers can birdwatch at dawn, then zipline 130 meters through the canopy to land at The Nest in a Kapock tree for breakfast. A midday canopy tour will also position guests onto this elevated structure for a three-course lunch. After dining comes an invigorating rappel off the 20 meter-high platform to terra firma between the lodge’s on-ground reception area and main restaurant. The Nest accommodates one seating (for up to five people) daily for breakfast and lunch. (Supplies are delivered by a pulley system.)

Breakfast menus consist of a choice of a seasonal selection of tropical fruits (papaya, pineapple, watermelon) with granola, eggs (any style) with ham, a choice of organic banana pancakes, French toast, or the traditional Gallo pinto (rice & beans) flavored with herbs and bean broth, served with sour cream, scrambled or fried eggs. Lunch menus offer a selection of fresh organic salads with grilled chicken, seared yellowfin tuna, or grilled vegetables with avocado and local Turrialba cheese. The kitchen follows a farm-to-table philosophy featuring organic and locally grown ingredients. They produce much of the fruit, vegetables and tubers served from Las Nubes de Tuis, a private, organic farm in the mountains above the Pacuare River.

Western River Expeditions’ core Costa Rica program can be arranged for just two people or for up to 25 and can be customized by lengthening or shortening the trip and by adding or deleting activities. Year-round departures on a space-available basis can be tailored to travelers’ schedules. The per person rate from $3,395 includes eight nights at four properties with five breakfasts, three each lunches and dinners; two half-day trips rafting class II-IV whitewater on the Pacuare River; two Pacuare Lodge activities; soaking in the thermal waterfalls and pools of Tabacón; a guided 3km walk over 15 suspension bridges (part of a guided two-mile walk in a private nature reserved); a tour of Manuel Antonio National Park and airport (San Jose) and interior destination transfers. The zip line-birdwatching-breakfast is $85 per person; the zip line canopy tour with lunch is $125 per person.

The tour utilizes four distinguished properties selected for panache, location and comfort: San Jose’s personable Hotel Grano de Oro; Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort where guests enjoy a swim-up bar, local and international gourmet cuisine and are positioned to explore the geology of Arenal Volcano and nearby hot springs; Pacuare Lodge (National Geographic Traveler World’s Best Ecolodge); and Tulemar Bungalows (a Travel + Leisure World’s Best award winner) in Manuel Antonio National Park offering oceans and beaches.
