Lugu Lake in West Sichuan and Northeast Yunnan, Southwest China

Lugu Lake was called Luku Haizi in ancient times, also known as Zuosuo Hai, and commonly known as Liang Hai. In the Mosuo language of the Naxi people, "Lu" means valley, and "Gu" means inside, so "Lugu" means the lake in the valley. The Lugu Lake scenic area is surrounded by high mountains and ridges, and there are more than three months of snow in a year. With rich forest resources, beautiful mountains and clear water, fresh air and charming scenery, Lugu Lake is regarded as the "Mother Lake" by the local Mosuo people. It is also known as "Penglai Fairyland".

There are Mosuo people and other 7 ethnic groups including Yi, Han, Naxi, Tibetan, Pumi, Bai, and Zhuang living along the lakeshore of Lugu Lake. There are about 13,000 people, including about 6,000 Mosuo people, more than 5,000 Mosuo people are living on the lakeshore of Lugu Lake at the Sichuan side.

The Mosuo People in the Lugu Lake area still retain the marriage customs of the matrilineal clan society, it is called the "Kingdom of Women".
