Slovenia: Europe’s Best Kept Secret

Story by Boundless Journeys

Slovenia is squeezed between four better-known and more popular countries: Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia, which means it is often overlooked by travelers seeking a European adventure. Guide books and travel websites reiterate this and note it’s the novelty and the lack of tourists that are reasons to visit.

But there are a plethora of other reasons, as well. This small country is devoted to protecting its natural resources and pristine beauty. The capital city Ljubljana was designated as the European Green Capital for 2016, and forest covers 60% of Slovenia’s land (third in Europe behind Finland and Sweden). The remaining area is mostly lush farmland, making it the perfect place for a variety of outdoor adventures and fresh, local produce.

In just one day, it’s possible to hike the Julian Alps, kayak in a glacial lake, swim in the Adriatic Sea, and sip wine at a local vineyard, and there are 24 distinct gastronomic regions, each with its own specialty that includes spectacular cheeses, wines, cured meats, pastas, goulash, breads, nuts, fruits, and sweets. Visitors will not go hungry in Slovenia, and active and culinary experiences are punctuated by rich history, storybook villages, impressive castles, and incredibly friendly people. The German, Italian, and Slavic influences of Slovenia’s neighbors can be seen and felt in the architecture, folk traditions, and cuisine.

Boundless Journeys developed their Julian Alps Hiking tour two years ago after its founder and president Matt Holmes traveled to and experienced Slovenia first hand. His goal was to share the beauty and diversity of Slovenia with other adventurous travelers.

“Our guests on the Slovenia tour usually fall into one of two categories,” says Holmes, “travel trailblazers who enjoy discovering places before most people know about them, or fans of Europe who have already been to the more popular destinations and want a different European experience. Sometimes they are both!”

The active itinerary includes hiking mountain passes and the vast network of trails, picnics beside rivers, a stop at Lake Bled (one of Europe’s most scenic spots), luxurious accommodations, and knowledgeable local guides. The 8-day tour is $4,295 per person and includes all accommodations, meals, and on-tour transportation, as well as local beer and wine with dinner and expert guides. Availability is limited for the following departures: June 25-July 7, July 30-Aug 6, Aug 27-Sept 3.
