Adventure travel specialist, World Expeditions is calling for volunteers to help supply fresh water to the Masai village of Kakoi in Tanzania on its 13 day Kakoi Secondary School Water Pipeline project, departing 16 September, 2014.

Located near the Tarangire National Park, around 473 students attend the community school and the World Expeditions project will lay 3kms of water pipeline from the Kakoi medical centre to the school, bringing clean water to the school for the first time. This is the second stage of the project, which first laid water pipes to the medical centre in 2012.

It’s far from all work, though, says World Expeditions Responsible Tourism Manager, Donna Lawrence, with participants enjoying a wilderness experience on safari in the Serengeti National Park and at Ngorongoro Crater, with opportunity to spot some of Africa's unique wildlife.

“The World Expeditions Foundation (WEF) and other generous donors have already facilitated building renovations at this school from which the students and staff greatly benefit,” Ms Lawrence said.  “This water project will be another huge step towards our commitment to improve the education environment for the students of Kakoi.”

The Kakoi community project is one of 4 projects administered by the company’s not for profit arm, World Expeditions Foundation, through its Community Project Travel brand, which works to alleviate poverty through better education. The World Expeditions Foundation works in consultation and collaboration with community leaders by improving school facilities in schools in Vietnam, Peru and Nepal, as well as the Kakoi project in Tanzania.

The Vietnam project is located in Vietnam’s North in the Mai Chau region, where WEF is assisting the Thanh Son Elementary School and Kindergarten to improve the overall standard of buildings, by building new bathrooms and a kitchen and paving the pathway to the school that during the wet season becomes virtually impassable.

In a village outside of Kathmandu, WEF is assisting in the construction of the two story Kshamawati Secondary School Hostel that will allow students to reside at the school during the week so that their focus remains on schoolwork and their attendance is improved.

High in the Andes, WEF is assisting in the construction of a number of green houses at the Huilloq School, which will grow much needed vegetables that would otherwise not survive in the harsh conditions.  The nutritional value created in the garden will benefit the children's learning and the garden will be used to teach agriculture as part of the curriculum.
